Our goal is to build a great place for great people to work. That means we are not tied to traditional compensation structures. Compensation is based on performance, and all associates are offered a choice as to how they want their compensation package structured. It also means that we are a meritocracy. We are only interested in the truly talented. Our approach to meeting this goal is hiring slowly, carefully looking for the right lateral hire. We also subscribe to the notion of “finding the right person for the bus” even if that requires hiring someone that does not necessarily fulfill an immediate need. As one person described it, “Our goals are not necessarily to fill a position. If we find the right person, we’ll just make it happen.” Building a great work environment requires finding and keeping the most talented associates. We offer challenging work in a small firm, team-based environment. Unlike some firms, we recognize that our people are one of our most valuable assets. That’s why we invest significant resources in developing associates’ legal and client-development skills. This requires partners to expend significant non-billable time providing associates feedback on assignments and training. We think this is time well spent. Because we are not a large firm, we look for lateral hires that fit within our culture. We also provide a better work/life balance than other firms by keeping a more reasonable billable-hour requirement. How someone can maintain a balanced life billing over 2,100 hours escapes us. Our associates are given responsibility and client interaction almost immediately. If you lack confidence or require significant supervision, you are probably not the right person for our team. If you do not get along well with others, you also are not right for us. We follow the no prima donnas rule as well. As we say, “no one is too good to make copies, including attorneys and partners.” If you are a self-starter, committed to exemplary customer service, and a team player, we encourage you to send us your resume.
